GUWAHATI: There was no let-up in the flood situation in Guwahati city for the third consecutive day on Thursday, even as eight persons sustained injuries due to landslides at various areas.

Three persons - Minu Hazarika, her son Debasish Hazarika and her daughter Darshana Hazarika - were grievously injured when a landslide damaged a house in the Ajanta Path in Noonmati. They have been admitted to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). Another landslide at the Kamakhya Gate Nursery damaged a house and injured a woman named Moni Dutta, who has been also admitted to the GMCH. In another incident, four persons were injured in a landslide at Kharghuli. A landslide was also reported from the Geetanagar area.

Incessant rain ensured that there is no abatement in high water levels in various areas of the city, leading to knee-deep water on all major and minor roads across the city. At some places, the water level was chest-high.

Two police stations in the Smart City - the Geetanagar Police Station and Satgaon Police Station - were swamped by waist-deep water. Police personnel at the Satgaon Police Station used rafts made of banana plants to ferry detenues to drier ground.

Residents of numerous apartment blocks in the Satgaon-Pathar Quarry area on Thursday requested assistance from the district administration as the high water level has kept them confined to their flats.

Areas such Rukminigaon, RG Baruah Road, GS Road, Anil Nagar, Nabin Nagar, Rajgarh, Hatigaon, Ganeshguri, Hedayatpur, VIP Road, Chandmari, Jyotikuchi, Tarun Nagar, Ghoramara, Down Town area, Chachal, Mathuragaon, Satgaon, Narengi Nepali Chowk, Khanapara, Jorabat, Chatribari, Boragaon, , Beltola Survey, Kamakhya Gate, Krishna Nagar, Juripar, the Gauhati University campus, the Guwahati Commerce College campus and Sijubari continued to remain flooded on Thursday.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), 24,300 people were affected by floods and landslides in the Kamrup (M) district as on Wednesday. As many as 677 residents of the city are taking shelter in three relief camps.

All private and Government schools and colleges have been directed to remain closed on Friday by the Kamrup (M) administration. On the other hand, all educational institutions will remain closed in Kamrup district on Friday as well as Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Water Resources Department informed that the Brahmaputra was flowing just 1.66 metre below the danger mark in the DC's office area this morning.

In view of the rising water level of the Brahmaputra, the Inland Water Transport Department has ordered cessation of ferry services between Guwahati and North Guwahati from 6 pm tomorrow.

It may be mentioned that Cabinet Minister Ashok Singhal, Kamrup (M) Deputy Commissioner Pallav Gopal Jha and GMC Commissioner Devashish Sharma surveyed the flood-affected areas of the city today.
